How to contact NASUWT for help

One of the most important roles of a trade union is to help members who are facing difficulties at work, for example being disciplined, facing competence procedures, or even facing redundancy. Sometimes members want assistance in appealing against a decision concerning their pay, want to lodge a grievance against a manager or colleague, or are the subject of a grievance lodged against them. In these instances, the NASUWT opens a case and members need to complete a “casework assistance form” which is available on the Derby NASUWT Branch website and send it to Dave Wilkinson, Branch Secretary. Cases will be dealt with in order of importance, so if a member is facing very serious immediate consequences as a result of management action these cases will take priority.

There has been a very large increase in casework which the branch carries out in recent years – some of this is because of the new flexibilities which schools have in matters such as performance pay and some is because of the large number of cases in Derby where teachers’ working conditions are under attack.

If you simply want information from the union, for example about whether you are eligible for threshold progression, you may find the information easily on Teachernet: http://www.teachernet.gov.uk/. A request for information is a query and if you ring or email the NASUWT East Midlands Regional Centre on 0115 976 7180 or rc-eastmids@mail.nasuwt.org.uk a member of staff will be able to respond to your query, although you may have to wait for a phone call if the appropriate member of staff is not available at the time you ring.

If you want the union to open a case, please do contact Dave Wilkinson – email is preferable to a phone message - and please leave a secure contact phone number with an ansaphone/ voicemail facility. If you get through to Dave’s voicemail, please try to be as precise about your case as you can.

Please note that Derby NASUWT does not provide counselling – this is provided by the Teacher Support Network on 08000562561 or http://www.teachersupport.info/ and The City Council’s Employee Assistance Programme if you are a City Council employee.

All these procedures help us to deliver an efficient service to the large number of members who require casework assistance."
